Categories & icons

Categories are your envelopes, and groups keep them tidy. Give them emoji icons - or let Allot detect brand logos and people automatically - so your budget is easy to scan.

Create a category group

  1. On the Plan tab, tap + New category.
  2. In New category group, type a name - an emoji at the start becomes its icon, e.g. 🏝️ Vacation, 🐾 Pets, 🎨 Hobbies.
  3. Tap Create.

Add a category

  1. Inside a group, tap + Sub in {group}.
  2. Type the category name, e.g. 🍱 Lunch out.
  3. Tap Add.

Rename a category by double-clicking its name; open its detail sheet to ✎ Rename Category or 🗑 Delete Category.

Set a custom emoji icon

  1. Tap a category's icon tile to open Choose an icon.
  2. Pick one from the grid, or type/paste any emoji in the field and tap Set.
  3. Tap Done. To go back to the automatic icon, tap Use default.

How Allot picks an icon automatically

If you don't set a custom icon, Allot chooses the best match in this order:

  1. Your custom icon, if you set one.
  2. A real brand logo for known brands (like Apple or Disney).
  3. A card-brand wordmark in the brand's color, for cards.
  4. An emoji at the start of the category name.
  5. A tinted monogram of the first letters.

So naming a category Netflix or Amex gives you a matching brand mark with no extra work.

Give a person an emoji

Have several categories named after the same person - Dad's Birthday, Christmas: Dad, Father's Day? Assign that person an emoji once and it appears on every category with their name.

  1. On the Plan tab, tap 👥 People.
  2. In the People panel, choose an emoji, type the person's Name (e.g. Dad), and tap Add.
  3. Tap Done. Every category containing that name now shows the emoji.

Troubleshooting

I can't delete a group

Move or delete the categories inside it first - a group needs to be empty before it can go.

The brand logo didn't appear

Automatic logos only exist for brands Allot recognizes. For anything else, set a custom emoji icon or start the name with one.
