Spending vs transfers
A transfer moves money between two of your own accounts - it isn't spending, so it shouldn't hit a budget category. Here's how transfers work and how to convert a transaction between spending and transfer.
What a transfer is
A transfer is money leaving one account you own and landing in another - moving cash to savings, or paying a credit card from checking. Because the money never left your world, a transfer has no budget category and doesn't change Ready to Assign. Allot records both sides as one paired transaction.
Create a transfer
- Open the transaction editor with the + button.
- Switch the top toggle to Transfer.
- Choose Paid from (the source account) and Paid to (the destination).
- Enter the Amount and an optional Memo, then tap Save.
Convert spending into a transfer
Imported a payment that Allot logged as spending, when it was really a transfer? Convert it in place - no need to delete and re-add.
- Open the transaction.
- Below the Account field, tap ↔ Make this a transfer….
- In Transfer - other account, choose the account the money went to (or came from).
- Tap Convert. Allot pairs the two accounts and clears the category - a transfer doesn't need one.
Convert a transfer back to spending
- Open the transfer transaction (it shows a Transfer leg badge).
- Tap ↔ Convert to spending.
- Allot removes the paired side and turns this row back into a normal charge. Pick a category for it and save.
Both conversions are undoable with Ctrl/Cmd + Z, which restores the exact prior shape.
Troubleshooting
“Pick the other account for the transfer”
Converting to a transfer needs a destination. Choose the other account in the dropdown, then tap Convert.
It won't let me convert
A couple of transactions can't be converted as-is: a financed purchase (remove the financing plan first) and a split transaction (remove the split first). Allot tells you which.
My transfer showed up in spending reports
It probably wasn't recorded as a transfer. Open it and use ↔ Make this a transfer…. Reports exclude real transfers automatically once they're paired.
