Covering overspending
When you spend more from a category than you assigned to it, its Available goes red. Covering means pulling money from somewhere else to bring it back to zero.
Spot overspending
Allot surfaces overspending everywhere so it never hides:
- The category's Available pill turns red and shows a negative amount.
- The Plan tab icon shows a red count badge of how many categories are overspent.
- A red banner appears reading <category> over $X (or N overspent · $X if several), which taps through to the overspent category.
Cover from Ready to Assign
If you still have unassigned money, this is the simplest fix.
- Open the overspent category from the banner or the Plan list.
- In the overspent block, tap 🩹 Cover $X from Ready to Assign.
- Allot moves exactly enough to bring the category back to $0.00.
Cover from another category
No spare money in Ready to Assign? Borrow from a category that has room.
- Open the overspent category and tap 🎯 Choose a category to cover overspending.
- Under Move money from, Allot lists every source with money to give - ⇧ Ready to Assign pinned at the top when it holds a balance, then categories richest first. A search field appears for long lists.
- Tap a source. Allot pulls just enough to clear the shortfall (never more than the source has), and keeps the sheet open if you're still short so you can tap another source.
- When the category is back to $0.00 or better, the sheet confirms it - tap Done.
Overspent credit-card categories
When you overspend on a credit card, its 💳 Credit Card Payments category can go negative too. Allot flags this as ⚠ Linked overspending and lets you cover it the same way. See Credit cards & payments.
Troubleshooting
“No category has money to spare”
Every category is fully committed. Assign more to Ready to Assign first (for example when new income arrives), then come back and cover. Until then, the red simply reflects reality - you spent money you hadn't planned for.
The red banner keeps coming back
Covering fixes this month. If a category overspends every month, its target is probably too low - raise it in Goals & targets so Auto-Assign funds enough next time.
